You know how it goes. You go to a festival, buy a poster depicting some illustrative representation of your favourite band playing that weekend, take it home and there it lives, under the bed between a pair mouldy old shoes.
When Matt came home from ATP Festival in 2007, he carefully (and gleefully) unwrapped three posters he had bought for the enviable price of £5.00 each. Both are adverts in beautiful mute colours and graphic illustration for Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Wilco and Akron Family gigs at Nottingham Rock City.
We have been meaning to frame these beauts ever since, and look up the artist who created them. One trip to Ikea and a quick Google later, sorted. The artist hides under a few guises online; Sumlin on Flickr, Speeding Train Design on MySpace, Honey is Funny on Blogspot but Chris Summerlin in the real world.
The designs are modestly modern, but have come from a place of good old nostalgia. He uses various iconography and visual gags that interpret the artist in a way only a fan could. Highlights on Flickr include posters for Low, Nottingham Cabaret and Fog. Lots of other lovely things can be found on MySpace.
The most surprising thing of all is that nearly all of the 100 posters are available to buy for £5.00 each, or 3 for £12. More info and contact on Myspace.
